Tally E-Invoicing Setup: 7.2 Readiness Checklist

Tally E-Invoicing Setup: 7.2 Readiness Checklist

Tally e-invoicing setup does not finish when the service provider is appointed. The appointment connects you to the Peppol network. It does not make your invoices valid. That depends on four masters, your ledger settings and a round of real test invoices. This is the checklist we work through before a business goes live.

What this guide covers

  • Why version 7.2 comes first
  • The four masters that cause most rejections
  • Ledger settings that change the VAT on an invoice
  • How to test with real invoices, not samples
  • The data faults that fail validation
  • A pass or fail checklist you can work down

Why version 7.2 comes first

Tally e-invoicing setup only exists from TallyPrime 7.1. Older versions do not have the e-invoicing menu at all. Nothing else on this list can be done until you are on 7.2, so check the version first. Tally’s own UAE e-invoicing ASP guide covers what the appointment step does.

If you need to upgrade, the TallyPrime installation guide shows how to put 7.2 on a clean machine. If you have not appointed a provider yet, do that first. Our Tally ASP registration walkthrough covers the EmaraTax steps and the Peppol ID check.

The appointment is not the deadline to work to. The legal date is when you must appoint a provider. Your real limit is being able to raise a valid e-invoice on day one. Cleaning up data is what takes the time. It cannot be done in the last week. The appointment date is 30 October 2026. 7 days left.

The readiness checklist

Work down the table in this order. Each row assumes the row above it is done. A fault early on makes every later test unreliable. A Tally e-invoicing setup is only as good as its weakest row.

Step What to confirm Typical failure
1. Version TallyPrime 7.2 or later, and the right company is open Older release, menu options missing
2. Appointment Provider appointed and a Peppol ID generated Submitted on EmaraTax but never refreshed in TallyPrime
3. Company details Legal name, address and TRN match your VAT registration A trading name or an abbreviation instead of the legal name
4. Party masters Every business customer has a name, address, emirate and TRN Blank TRN on a business customer
5. Item and unit masters Each item has a VAT classification and a proper unit of measure Items created with a typed unit such as “box”
6. Currency Currency masters are correct if you invoice in anything other than AED A currency added once on a single voucher
7. Ledgers Sales ledgers carry the right VAT classification and reverse charge flags One sales ledger reused for every type of supply
8. Trial run Real invoices entered through the new process while the old one still runs One test invoice, then declaring it done
9. Readiness report The built-in e-invoice reports show transactions as ready Never opened, so failures stay hidden until go-live

Work down the table in order. Most failed invoices come from the first four rows.

Four masters cause most rejections

Almost every validation failure in a Tally e-invoicing setup comes from master data, not from software settings. Spend your time on these four.

  • Party masters. You need the legal name, full address, emirate and TRN for every business customer. A missing or mistyped TRN is the most common reason an invoice is rejected. The software cannot guess it.
  • Item masters. Each item needs a VAT classification. An unclassified item can still pass on a manual invoice. It fails in the structured format, because the format asks for the VAT treatment on every line.
  • Unit of measure. Define units in the unit master. Do not type a unit freehand on the voucher. Free text units do not survive conversion to the structured format.
  • Currency masters. If you invoice customers abroad, set the currency up as a proper master with the right format. Do not add it once on a single voucher.

Ledger settings

Ledgers decide how VAT is calculated. A wrong setting produces a wrong invoice even when every master is clean.

  • One sales ledger per VAT treatment. Do not put standard rated, zero rated and exempt supplies in one ledger. It gives the wrong VAT breakdown later.
  • Reverse charge flags. Set them where they apply, and no wider. Since the October 2026 amendments, intragroup supplies have a temporary exclusion. A blanket setting will misfire.
  • Invoice fields. If your invoices are missing required details today, fix that first. See creating a VAT compliant tax invoice. The structured format checks the same fields.

Test with real invoices

Sample data proves the software runs. Real data proves your masters are clean. Only one of those tells you whether your Tally e-invoicing setup is ready.

  1. Pick a real week Re-enter invoices from a recent week. Include the awkward ones: a credit note, an export, a customer with a different delivery address.
  2. Run both processes side by side Keep raising invoices the old way while you test the new one. A failure then does not stop the business.
  3. Clear the readiness report TallyPrime can report readiness for each transaction. Treat every failing line as a data problem to fix, not as a report to ignore.
  4. Train the people who raise invoices The finance manager is rarely the first person to reach the new screen. Train the sales desk and the counter too.

Questions we get asked about Tally e-invoicing setup

Can we keep our current invoice format?
The fields can stay the same. They must be complete and correctly classified, because the invoice travels as structured data, not as a printed page. Expect to tighten master data even if the layout does not change.
How long does the readiness work take?
It depends on your masters. A business with clean customer TRNs and item classifications gets through it in days. A business that has typed TRNs freehand for years must fix the data first. That is the step nobody plans for.
Do we need TallyPrime Gold for this?
No. You need version 7.2, and that applies to every edition. The edition only changes how many people can work at once. If several staff raise invoices, compare the TallyPrime price in the UAE before you assume e-invoicing forces an upgrade.
What happens if an invoice fails after go-live?
The buyer does not receive it. That is why the side-by-side test run matters. It shows you these failures while the old process is still there to fall back on.
Is there work to do after go-live?
Yes. Masters drift. New customers arrive with details missing. The rules keep moving. That is where an AMC arrangement earns its keep, because the work is ongoing, not one-off.

Where to start

If you have not appointed a provider, start there. The UAE e-invoicing deadline explains who the date applies to. The UAE e-invoicing overview explains the network itself.

If the appointment is done and invoices still fail, look at the first four rows of the Tally e-invoicing setup checklist. The problem is usually there, not in the software.
